they wanted to take votes away from john kerry. they got banned by wal-mart for partisan registration efforts. how right-wing do you have to be to get banned by wal-mart? the most important part of all of that is taking democratic demonstrations and ripping them up as they have in the past or as they were in this case in florida changing the addresses so when somebody goes to vote they say i'm sorry you can't vote, you don't live here. even a republican from utah during an investigation of this earlier, said, wow, we didn't do anything like this, he said quote . . . and that's chris cannon republican of utah. did he ever get prosecuted for any of this? no, because after they do the voter fraud, bush won. and the bush administration decided they won't pursue charges. really? how surprising. so mitt romney goes to the same bag of trips. and they have also paid $20,000. they said we use this vendor for signature-gathering services, but have not used them since 2011. i love that quote. because it makes it seem like we haven't used these guys all the way from . . . last year. a

. john kerry did the job and stood in for mitt romney in the president's camp. and then standing in for the president in romney's debate preps, the silver haired guy in the pink shirt is ohio senator rob portman. and, in fact, portman has really become the go-to guy for republican candidates who need a sparg partner. he's really good at this. but here's the thing, he's never really talked publicly about his role, the preparation and how his debate preps have gone. until now. because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mcc

senator john kerry, who has been there himself. >> what happens during these mock debates? >> they do not talk a lot about what happens during these. what they try to do is try to set a situation that is as realistic as possible for the actual debate. they do it at the same time and night the debate will take place. they set up a set just like it will look like in denver. they are used the environment. they have somebody to play the moderator and ask questions. obama does not like sound bites. they force him to give answers. they do whatever they can to simulate the debate situation. >> you quote a former chief of staff to boast -- to vice- president alkyl and joe -- al gore and joe biden. let me read some of his points. -- can you elaborate? >> sure. he is not really specifically using this advice for romney or obama, although i have no doubt many of these tips are being passed on to president obama. it is interesting. that was my first short summary of what he has to say. he went into more debt -- depth about each one of those things. impressions of the debate are formed very early.
